Ayurveda is not only limited to curing diseases. Ayurveda is more about an ideal healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda talks about how one should conduct his/her daily acts, what to eat, when to eat, how to behave and so on. In my opinion Ayurveda is the most detailed treaty on the subject of a perfect health regime.

First is the Ayurvedic Lifestyle and the second is food as per Ayurveda. Both of these are very vast subjects and books not articles are needed in order to discuss these in detail.

Now let’s understand about the Ayurvedic lifestyle. First you need to understand that time is the single most important factor in our lives. The earth moves around the sun and also on its axis, the moon moves around the earth and so on. Because of these rotations we have days and nights and months and year. Because of earth’s rotation we have different seasons or Ritus as we call them in Sanskrit. Our ancestors divided an year in 12 months and 6 seasons or ritus. Look at the chart below to understand it from the english calendar we use today.

Ayurveda says that the secret to a healthy life is that we behave, act and eat as per the seasons or ritus. The secret of the longevity and health of our ancestors was this only to a large extent. Now let me describe you the lifestyle one should adopt in different seasons or ritus. In another article I’ll discuss about the food intake as per seasons or ritus.

Vasant Ritu/ March April :

1.      This is a good time to detoxify your body using Panchkarmas.

2.      This is a good time for physical exercises or gym.

3.      This is a good time to smoke but also understand that in Ayurveda smoking uses different natural ingredients not tobacco.

4.      This is a good time to have dishes made out of wheat flour

5.      This is a good time to have controlled sex.

Greeshm Ritu/ May June:

1.      One should have rice made with ghee and milk during this season.

2.      One should not drink alcohol during these months and if one still takes it then he should mix it with lot of water.

3.      It is prohibited to have sex or doing physical exercises during this season/ritu.

4.      One should take an afternoon nap during this season/ritu.

Varsha Ritu/ July August:

1.      One should have acidic, salty and oily food during this season/ritu.

2.      One should have the soup during this season/ritu.

3.      One should have a lot of honey during this season/ritu.

4.      One should not sleep outside one’s home or on roof during this season/ritu.

5.      It is prohibited to have sex and doing physical exercise during this season/ritu.

Sharad Ritu/ September October:

1.      It is good to have sugar and grains in this season/ritu.

2.      One should not eat oily and fatty things during this season.

3.      It is prohibited to sleep during the day in this season/ritu.

4.      One should not eat curd during this season.

5.      One should abstain from sex and physical exercises during this season/ritu.

Hemant Ritu/ November-December:

1.      One should drink alcohol and honey during this season/ritu.

2.      One should do oil massage daily during this season/ritu.

3.      One should have sex as per one’s wishes during this season/ritu.

4.      It is prohibited to eat less during this season.

5.      It is prohibited to sleep during the day in this season.

Shishir Ritu/ January-February:

1.      One should act as per the Hemant Ritu/season during Shishir Ritu as well.

2.      One should not eat anything cold during this season/ritu.

3.      This topic is so vast that it’ll take at least a book to define this seasonal regime in detail. Time changes and so do we. I completely understand that it is difficult for a commoner to strictly follow these guidelines in today’s time. What we can do is, we can follow as much as we can. I have just given you a basic idea of what Ayurveda says about seasons. In next article I’ll cover the food part of it which is easier to follow in today’s time.

4.      Ayurveda Tip- One of the best thing to have everyday with lots of healing properties is Chhaachh or Mattha as par Ayurveda. People make it in different ways. I am defining the ‘divine’ process of making it. Yes it has actually come from Devatas.

5.      Boil the buffalo milk and simmer the heat. Let it boil till the time it reduces to 2/3rd of the original volume. Now make the curd of this boiled milk. Mow take out the butter from it by churning it. The liquid that is left after taking out the butter is the Chhaachh or Mattha.

6.      One should have it everyday. It is one of the best thing available to humankind. Only restriction is that one should not have it early morning or at night.
